Chapter Sixteen

After a full morning of sleuthing, I was ready for lunch. And for seeing Alex too, of course!

Luke gently gripped Fuzzball’s lead as we strolled along the banks of the Seine. The sky was a deep crisp blue and the early-afternoon air was chilly, but we were wrapped up snug. Before we’d set off, Luke had borrowed a few of Alex’s warm layers - because he’d arrived here without a coat. That had given me the perfect excuse to show him around our luxury hotel room, and he’d been as impressed as I was!

On either side of the river, Paris stood proud like a living museum. Just like London, the skyline here was a beautiful blend of old and new. Notre Dame’s elegant spires peeked above the rooftops, and the Eiffel Tower’s iron lattice frame gleamed in the distance. With the winter sun shining down, we strolled past galleries, cafés, tourists, and locals.

And then, there he was - my gorgeous boyfriend. It’d only been a couple of hours since I’d last seen him, but my heart surged with love and joy. He was leaning against a railing, gazing into the river - and probably thinking about murder suspects. But as he saw us, his face lit up and his dimples appeared, making my spirits soar.

“Hey, Dimples!” I called out, waving.

Fuzzball barked excitedly and almost yanked Luke off his feet.

Alex crouched to rough and tumble with his dog, who sneezed and bounced around with glee. “Missed you too, Maxy!”

Then, suddenly noticing what was wrong, Alex shot to his feet. “Luke! What are you doing here? I thought you had an exam, mate? And... how dare you look better in my jumper than I do!”

Luke laughed as he and Alex exchanged a hearty back-slapping hug.

As Luke explained his surprise appearance, Alex listened in awe of magic. But he hadn’t actually greeted me yet, and my little stunt with the dessert trolley was bound to be on his list of questions.

I stroked Fuzzball’s ears. “We’d better butter him up, pup.”

As Fuzzball barked, a slab of butter appeared in my hand. Oh no! I grabbed my own wrist, fighting the urge to smear my boyfriend in dairy products. Well, that actually sounded delightful - but not here and not with butter!

Alex folded his arms to watch. “What’s she doing, Luke? Why’s she trying to attack me with a stick of butter?”

Luke smirked. “She’s been doing weird stuff all day. Well, weirder than usual. It’s because Fuzzball’s new collar is making metaphors happen literally. That’s how I got here.”

Alex unclipped Fuzzball’s lead. “Why don’t you just take the collar off him?”

I managed to get my butter assault under control. “Because we need to send Luke back home. But after that, I shall be paying Bert another visit. I think I’ll make him eat his words...”

Alex grinned. “I’m looking forward to that. Maybe I’ll get to see these famous black marble eyes!”

The butter vanished, so I stepped forward to kiss Alex on the lips. “Missed you, Dimples.
